New signing Nathan Lamey, had a day to remember on his debut for Bromsgrove Rovers. Scoring two goals, missing a penalty and then being sent-off late in the second half. Sutton Coldfield were missing their top marksmen Justin Rowe and Damien Markman, fielded a young side against a Rovers side with six new signings making their debuts at Coles Lane in this opening Midland Division game.
Lamey opened the scoring in the 6th minute, when he pounced on a mistake from Nathan Moran and fired the ball home into the bottom corner past Darren Causer in goal. Rovers doubled thier advantage in the 14th minute, Lamey raced onto Dean Coleman's clearence upfield, he saw his effort parried away by Causer, but the striker grabbed the rebound to slot home from an acute angle. Lamey had a chance for his hat-trick after Moran upended Kevin Banner in the area, he stepped up to take the penalty and saw his spot kick saved by Causer with his legs in the 26th minute. Rovers were in complete control of the game and should have scored more goals. Lamey fired wide in the 31st minute. Two minutes later Richard Burgess beat the Sutton offside trap, he pulled the ball back to James Smith, who miss-hit his effort wide.
The Royals pulled a goal back against the run of play when Davidon Hamilton scored an oppertunist header from Leon Doughty's free-kick in the 38th minute. Sutton were reduced to ten men when Moran received his second booking on 42 minutes and seconds later Lamey was booked for comming onto the field of play without permission from Referee Nick Hobbis.
The Royals reorganised in the second half and the ten men took the game to Rovers. Hamilton fired over the bar in the 48th minute and Matt Brown glanced a header just wide after 50 minutesas they dominated the first 20 minutes of the second half.
Rovers got back into the game, Mark Taylor set Smith away down the right but his cross was too deep for any of the forwards in the box aftrer 66 minutes. The Greens had a goal disallowed two minutes later after Chris McHale bundled the ball home after a goalmouth scramble but it was ruled out for offside.
Rovers continued to create chances but the final ball let them down when in a good position. The teams were evened up in the 82nd minute when Lamey received his second yellow for a late tackle on Doughty. In the 89th minute Rovers had a chance to wrap up the game, Neal Davis evaded his marker by the corner flag, cut up the by-line but failed to pick out one of the two players waiting in the box.
